Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Land of Pines, New Jersey. For anyone requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with test centers available in all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for most tests. Hair samples are analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing requirements.

Recently, the practice of drug screening has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are employed by organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The primary advantage is the extended period of drug detection, which lasts up to 90 days, maintained through an observed collection process, minimizing the chance of tampering. However, for substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now considered a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively immune to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10-panel screenings, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test includes the steps of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample processing into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample has been properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drug misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples that are potentially positive during Screening require an additional confirmation process.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), indicating why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug usage across a timeline, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Land of Pines, NJ is evident through several advantages. Hair tests provide a deeper analysis, detecting drug use over months instead of days, which is the limit of urine tests. This extended detection window ensures greater accuracy and reliability in evaluating individuals' substance usage histories.

Employers prefer hair tests over urine tests because of their superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests negate the chance of cheating, as hair samples can reveal long-term drug habits, thus helping employers maintain zero-tolerance policies efficiently.

Extended Detection Window

In Land of Pines, NJ, hair follicle tests are treasured for their Extended Detection Window. They offer the ability to detect drug use spanning up to 90 days, surpassing the limits of urine tests. This comprehensive perspective allows employers to discern a complete view of substance histories, ensuring thorough and informed decisions regarding hiring and maintaining personnel.

Hair tests excel in their capability to map an individual's substance use pattern over an extended period. This invaluable tool is used by employers to scrutinize and understand potential red flags in an applicant's or current employee's history, maintaining a safe workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the standout features of hair follicle drug tests in Land of Pines, NJ is their Tamper-Resistant Testing Method. These tests minimize the risk of sample alteration, ensuring reliable outcomes every time. The collection process is conducted under observation, making it extremely difficult to tamper with the sample, which leads to trustworthy and indisputable results.

With hair follicle tests, compromising the integrity of the test is significantly reduced, offering security and precision that urine tests cannot match. By using methods that are nearly impossible to cheat, these tests solidify confidence in the results, essential for high-stakes decision-making processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
