Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Monroeville, NJ. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis, with testing centers nationwide. To conduct a hair test, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is typically needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be custom-tailored for specific substances.

Recently, the hair follicle method has become a standard in drug testing. It is preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests serve employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation monitoring. The main advantage of this test is its extensive detection period of up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is nearly foolproof. Yet, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by securing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, it can deliver a detection time frame of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp contributes 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test processing encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not included via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drug abuse indicators. Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most samples, yet a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary Confirmation.

Should a sample display a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial collection for Extraction. This phase involves drugs being extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows usage patterns: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this test inspects the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Monroeville, NJ, hair follicle testing stands out against the traditional urine test. The superiority lies in its extensive detection window, making it difficult for users to obscure drug usage history. Moreover, the reliability of hair tests ensures consistent and accurate outcomes, offering employers peace of mind in maintaining a drug-free work environment.

Extended Detection Window

With the ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, hair follicle tests in Monroeville, NJ, offer a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history. This extended detection period surpasses that of urine tests, providing employers with detailed insights into an applicant's or employee's drug use over time, beyond mere temporary abstention.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Monroeville, NJ, significantly reduces sample adulteration risks. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are nearly tamper-proof, as the observed collection and unique processing methods ensure genuine samples. This leads to credible results, validating the authenticity of the testing process and upholding the integrity of drug testing outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
