In Montville, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair-based drug and alcohol screenings ensures that testing needs are met quickly. With conveniently located testing centers nationwide, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches is generally required for accurate analysis, assessing substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific tests.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for substance detection in recent years, superseding traditional urine tests. Employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists who enforce strict no-drug policies often prefer this method due to its extensive detection timeframe—typically up to 90 days—along with the collection's observed nature and near-immunity to fraud. Nonetheless, urine tests remain effective for detecting recent substance use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective tool for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair serves as a record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the laboratory involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample’s initial setup in a laboratory’s system. This process entails confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any further data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening provides an affordable means to eliminate the possibility of drug use in most samples, positive results from it require confirmation to be used in a legal setting. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample register a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a concentration much lower than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging process to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Dodging a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more dependable results.
  • Offers historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: About 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing forms.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Surpasses Urine Testing in Montville, NJ lies in its superior precision and reliability. Hair follicle tests capture a broader history of substance exposure, surpassing the limited detection window of urine tests. This method is robust against manipulation and provides a clearer picture of an individual's drug use habits.

Outperforming Urine Tests, hair tests deliver a comprehensive viewpoint, as they cover a longer detection period. The rigorous process ensures consistent, trustworthy data, thereby supporting organizations in maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Extended Detection Window

Prolonged Detection Capability in Montville, NJ highlights the merit of hair follicle testing, which identifies drug use dating up to 90 days prior. This prolonged look-back affords employers a detailed perspective on an applicant's or employee's history, essential for environments requiring stringent oversight.

The extensive detection window of hair testing allows critical analysis of habitual substance use, offering a significant advantage over alternative methods, where shorter timeframes limit effectiveness.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Robust Against Tampering in Montville, NJ, hair follicle tests significantly minimize the chances of sample adulteration. These tests are collected under observation, making them nearly impermeable to deceitful tactics, thus providing results that organizations can trust unequivocally.

Using hair samples substantially diminishes tampering risks, presenting a reliable solution for verifying drug-free status with certainty and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
