Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in North Caldwell, NJ. For those needing such analysis, our centers, located in cities across the nation, are equipped for hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be sampled. Our hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug evaluations have been more prevalent for testing substances. These tests are favored by employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals over the traditional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation subjects often rely on them. Their key advantage is the ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, using observed collections, which make them extremely difficult to falsify. Yet, for detecting very recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When collected close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to precisely weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair only, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into the lab's system. This step involves verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances. It is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most cases, yet a positive screening result demands confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples presumed positive during screening need further confirmation.

If a sample registers as presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at a concentration significantly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening follows using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Minimized cheating potential: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Shows usage history: It offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: When called "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that is assessed, not the scalp-embedded hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
