Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Orange, New Jersey. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair analysis, with facilities in every city nationally to administer the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be assessed. Hair tests are versatile, accommodating drug, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke testing requirements.

Nowadays, hair follicle drug testing has gained preference as a viable method for identifying substance use. It's becoming a standard for employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts, replacing conventional urine tests. Entities enforcing strict no-drug policies find this method invaluable. It offers an extended detection capability for up to 90 days, gathered under supervision, minimizing fraud attempts. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a formidable method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By locking biomarkers within the growing hair strand, hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug usage. When collected next to the scalp, hair can present an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It’s easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and analyses above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test processing comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial adoption of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step checks that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary fast assessment for substances of abuse. Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most samples, but a positive result requires confirmation for court acceptability. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening stands as the toughest methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can pinpoint drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, boosting the accuracy of results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It uncovers drug usage trends over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination measures the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle drug testing outshines urine testing in Orange, NJ due to its superior precision. While traditional urine tests detect substances over a short span, hair tests offer lasting surveillance. Urine tests are limited in tracking long-term usage, thus hair follicle testing is favored for its thoroughness and longer detection period, ensuring a more comprehensive assessment of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

With a detection window of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Orange, NJ provides employers with a detailed overview of an individual's drug use history. Unlike other methods that offer a short-term analysis, this extended period paints a broader picture, aiding in informed decision-making regarding an employee’s past substance use behavior.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle approach significantly reduces tampering risks compared to other methods. In Orange, NJ, this testing method assures reliable outcomes by minimizing adulteration possibilities. The ability to avoid sample tampering leads to unquestionable and trusted results, strengthening the credibility of the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
