Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Ramtown, NJ. Specializing in hair analysis, we operate centers nationwide capable of performing these tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other custom testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method over standard urine testing. Employers, courts, and professionals in substance abuse now favor this test due to its extended detection window up to 90 days and near-impossibility of evasion. However, for recent use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When acquired near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection window of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil's diameter) from close to the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests over ten panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically indicate scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The procedure for laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system. This process involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Even though Screening is cost-efficient for dismissing drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Presumptive positive samples identified in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

For samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcomes is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presuming positivity are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair section and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection time frame.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Records usage patterns: Provides insight into patterns of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand rather than the underside follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Ramtown, NJ, hair follicle drug testing surpasses urine testing with its superior detection and reliability. The hair test not only offers a longer detection window but also minimizes the chances of tampering and inaccuracy, delivering more dependable results.

The comprehensive nature of hair testing captures a broader substance use history, unlike traditional urine tests, providing a more accurate reflection of an individual's long-term drug habits.

Extended Detection Window

Offering an extended detection period, hair follicle drug testing in Ramtown, NJ reveals drug use up to 90 days prior, furnishing employers with a detailed view of a subject’s substance history. This thoroughness is invaluable in assessing an employee's or candidate's behavioral integrity.

The broadened examination period aids in making informed decisions by highlighting patterns of use or abstinence, proving critical for workplace safety and compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The inherent resistance to tampering makes hair follicle testing in Ramtown, NJ a preferred choice for authentic and unquestionable results. Unlike urine tests, hair samples eliminate opportunistic manipulations, ensuring the integrity of each test.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
