Accredited Drug Testing is a trusted provider of comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Richwood, NJ. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, an inch and a half to two inches of hair is required, taken from the top of the head or other body parts, for testing substances like drugs or customized options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted the use of hair follicle assessments. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine screenings. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationers rely on hair tests due to their extended drug detection up to 90 days, thanks to the supervised sample collection. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a timeline of substance use. A sample collected near the scalp can reveal usage within a 3-month period. Hair is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length with about 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil) yields roughly 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair is an alternative. We specify scalp hair when mentioning head hair, while body hair encompasses other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial sample processing stage in a lab’s system. It involves verifying the sample’s seal and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. It's a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Samples that appear positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, further hair from the primary specimen is used for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmed positive screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes assessment under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Immunity to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage pattern: It can outline ongoing drug usage history, rather than just detecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates might influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", this test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug screening in Richwood, NJ, the benefits of hair follicle testing surpass those of urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
