Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in West Long Branch, New Jersey. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing facilities available nationwide. Ideally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair for the test. Hair tests are versatile, covering drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent times as a trusted method. It is increasingly adopted by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts who favor hair tests over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and probation officers prefer hair tests due to their extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection process, and high resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the optimal choice for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair archives a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection duration for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tricky to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch piece of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair could be obtained. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes verifying that the sample was adequately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial swift assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for it to be admissible in court. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening do need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair denotation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine examinations which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical information: It can supply a trend of drug use over some duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
