In East Pecos, New Mexico, Accredited Drug Testing provides a full suite of hair follicle drug testing services. Our facilities across the nation, including in East Pecos, are prepared to conduct hair tests for drugs or alcohol upon request. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or elsewhere suffices. Hair samples can be evaluated for substances, alcohol levels, or other custom tests.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests over traditional urine tests has grown. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts increasingly mandate hair tests, citing their extended detection window of up to 90 days, tight observation during collection, and minimal risk of tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands capture long-term markers of these substances, storing them in the developing fibers. When cut near the head, hair can reveal a history of alcohol and other drug use over an estimated 90-day period. It's straightforward to gather, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, equates to roughly 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirming tests. For additional tests or those exceeding 10 panels, it’s advisable to collect 150mg. Use a jeweler’s scale for precision. If head hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. ‘Head hair’ specifies scalp hair only, whereas ‘body hair’ covers all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in the lab processing for a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially entered into a lab’s system. This step checks that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening step consists of an initial, expedient assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in legal settings. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration much lower than other methods like urine or oral fluids, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

A GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS method confirms any positive screening result. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is meticulously reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Offers insight into drug use patterns over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Generally costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
