Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Lamy, New Mexico. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers available Nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing alternatives.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have been increasingly utilized in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often favor a hair drug test over a standard urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation individuals commonly use hair follicle tests. The main advantage of a hair test is its extended detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, collected in a closely monitored process, and it's nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use detected within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a detailed, extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair's structure. When gathered directly from the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a time span of up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and verification purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or testing beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Scalp hair is specifically referred to as head hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides an economical way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires verification for legal proceedings. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a specimen return a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging techniques to conduct.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a timeline of drug use patterns, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair coloration and individual hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
