Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bowmansville, New York. Our expertise lies in both hair drug and alcohol testing, and our nationwide testing centers are equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the scalp or body. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, the popularity of hair follicle drug tests has surged. Many employers, legal courts, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair testing over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests are favored by those with strict no-drug policies, legal proceedings, and probation assessments. The prominent advantage of hair drug tests is their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, achieved through an observed collection process, making it extremely hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use, urine tests remain the most accurate within the first 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can indicate up to a three-month usage history for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and affirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is made. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" covers all alternative hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary management of a sample within a lab's system. This process includes ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a rapid initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Even though Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires verification to be legally valid. All samples indicate positive presumptions in the Screening phase, thereby necessitating secondary confirmation.

In the case of a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations in contrast to other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to conduct.

Confirmation of any screening that results in a positive is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as positive presumption are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The overall lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to trick: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring increased accuracy of results.
  • Historical data provision: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing shines over urine testing in Bowmansville, NY by offering unparalleled detection accuracy. Hair tests can reveal drug use over a much longer duration, capturing a comprehensive history of substance intake. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses are almost impossible to tamper with due to observed collection methods.

Employers benefit from hair testing's extended detection window, ensuring no prior drug use goes unnoticed. This innovative approach serves to support zero-tolerance policies far more effectively than traditional methods.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests in Bowmansville, NY is unparalleled. Capable of revealing drug use up to 90 days prior, these tests provide employers with a clear understanding of an individual's substance use history. This long window is invaluable for pre-employment screenings and ongoing assessments.

By offering this prolonged detection time, hair tests allow for better-informed hiring decisions and ongoing evaluations, fostering a safer and more compliant workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Bowmansville, NY stands out as a robust, tamper-resistant drug testing method. The observable collection process ensures sample integrity, significantly reducing the chance of manipulations or substitutions, unlike urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
