Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening in Clarence Center, New York. When you’re in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, turn to us for expertise in hair assessments. We have facilities across the nation to execute these tests. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body is necessary. Hair assessments cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke options.

In the past, drug testing has increasingly employed hair follicle analysis. Many businesses, legal systems, and addiction specialists now mandate this over traditional urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and those on probation favor hair testing. The key advantage is its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, performed under supervision, making it hard to alter. Yet, urine tests remain superior for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can deliver an approximate 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch piece of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't present, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test follows four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies the sample’s seal and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry that wasn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (urine or oral fluid, for instance), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen result uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is verified under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing the credibility of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
