Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis services in Ogdensburg, New York. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair testing, with centers available Nationwide for conducting tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair testing can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent years, the hair follicle drug test has become a more routine method for drug screening. Employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists increasingly prefer hair testing over urine tests. Organizations enforcing strict drug-free policies, as well as legal systems and probationary supervisors, find hair follicle tests invaluable. A key advantage is its ability to detect drug use up to 90 days with near-impossibility to manipulate. However, for recent substance use within 5 days, urine tests still provide the best accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair serves as a record of extended alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month window for detecting alcohol and substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, quite resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing about 200 hair strands (roughly akin to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair can't be sourced, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four main steps in processing a drug test in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab system. It involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laborary Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not incorporated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick check for substance abuse. Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, but a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in the Screening phase require secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than seen in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is among the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation of a positive screen is carried out with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as needed before confirmation. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly hard, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Gives historical insights: It can reflect a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
