Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis services in Rapids, New York. If a hair-based drug or alcohol screen is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this domain and operates testing facilities nationwide, capable of executing hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair may be sufficient. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other custom options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle methodology. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are requesting hair tests rather than standard urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict drug policies, judiciary bodies, and individuals under probation. Their main advantage is a prolonged detection window for substances, spanning up to 90 days, obtained under observation, and very difficult to deceive. That said, urine tests maintain better accuracy for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is perceived as an effective method for identifying the use of alcohol and drugs. Hair captures a long-term history of substances by embedding biomarkers within its strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage data for nearly three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively tough, and transportation is hassle-free.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hairs, comparable to a #2 pencil's width, and closest to the scalp will generate 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or when performing tests with more than 10 panels, a recommended 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in processing a lab drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample begins its integration into the laboratory's system, which entails verification of sealed and correctly shipped samples, allocation of a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any residual data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows potential positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing why hair drug analysis is notably challenging to conduct.

Positive screened outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specialty and adheres to the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can unveil drug usage for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that offer a shorter detection time.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is daunting, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides chronological data: It delivers a sequential pattern of drug consumption over an extended duration, rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection challenge: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth characteristics can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
