Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Sand Ridge, New York. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses, and we have centers Nationwide across all cities ready to conduct a hair assessment. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body may be utilized. Hair examinations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug assessments have increasingly become a common method for drug testing. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug analysis over the traditional urine assessments. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation individuals rely on hair follicle exemptions. The key benefit of a hair follicle test is its extended detection timeline for drugs, usually reaching up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is very hard to cheat. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use during the last 5 days, urine analysis remains the most precise test.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures involved in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step checks that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples that are preliminarily positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to compromise a hair drug test, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
