Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Alarka, North Carolina. Whether you're looking for a drug or alcohol test conducted through hair analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we operate centers across all cities Nationwide capable of performing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used for testing. Our hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a commonly preferred method for drug testing. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse programs are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation programs find hair tests advantageous. The key benefit includes a detection span of up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection minimizing tampering chances. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair, it provides a prolonged account of alcohol and other drugs usage. When harvested from near the scalp, hair offers a detection span extending up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and can be easily shipped.

An ideal sample comprises a 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding about 100mg of hair for optimal screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" is specified as scalp hair exclusively, while "body hair" encompasses all alternative hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system, including checks to ensure proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a swift preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional hair from the initial sample be prepared for Extraction, where drugs are extracted at lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed according both to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The difficulty in evading a hair drug test results in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It delivers a drug usage pattern across a span of time, rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher expenses than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strands, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
