Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Albemarle, NC. For anyone needing drug or alcohol analysis through hair, our centers nationwide facilitate precise testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either head or body suffices for analysis, targeting drugs, alcohol, or customized tests.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has emerged as a preferred method over traditional urine testing by many employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts. This testing is invaluable for zero-tolerance policies and probation checks, offering up to 90 days' substance use detection, enhancing its unbeatable accuracy. Urine tests, however, are best for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive account of substances and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When gathered proximate to the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of up to about three months for various substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hairs (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will supply 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We recommend the use of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. For head hair, we refer to scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This procedure ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial cursory evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug consumption in most specimens, a screen turning positive requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening need additional verification.

Should a sample display presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Preparation for Extraction. During this period, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus presenting challenges in hair drug screening methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples showing presumptive positivity are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Cheating resistance: Evading a hair drug test is notably tricky, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a continual record of drug use over a timed period, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectability: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs relative to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variances can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Located in Albemarle, NC, hair follicle testing offers compelling advantages over urine tests. Its superior detection accuracy through an extended timeline makes it the better choice for businesses aiming to enforce zero-drug policies. Employers benefit from its precise and reliable outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
