Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Andrews, North Carolina. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair analysis is supported by Nationwide testing facilities, including all city locations, to carry out hair testing efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body/s may be used. This method can help detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific tests.

In recent times, drug screening approaches have increasingly included hair follicle testing. Many organizations, judicial bodies, and substance recovery specialists are now opting for hair drug analyses over traditional urine screens. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, court systems, and probationary programs are among those utilizing hair tests. The main advantage lies in its extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it extremely challenging to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent substance use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs. When clipped near the scalp, it can reveal evidence of alcohol and drug use for approximately up to a 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprised of roughly 200 strands of hair (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive screens must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples that screen as presumptively positive necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Any positive screening result must be confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that screen positive are cleaned before confirming as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It’s notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal patterns of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Andrews, NC, are evident. Hair tests demonstrate superior accuracy, offering a longer detection window and reducing the possibilities for deceit during sample collection. Whereas urine tests provide shorter detection periods, hair testing identifies substance use across months, providing thorough and reliable insights.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Andrews, NC, provides an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This feature enables employers to obtain a comprehensive review of an individual's substance history. By looking beyond the typical short-term scope of alternative tests, organizations gain a clearer understanding of an employee's or applicant's drug consumption patterns over a more extensive timeframe.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Operating in Andrews, NC, hair follicle drug testing presents a tamper-resistant method that greatly minimizes the risk of adulterated samples. This testing technique ensures dependable outcomes, as the complexity of altering hair samples affirms the integrity and authenticity of the final results, providing unquestionable data that stakeholders can rely on with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
