Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Bath, North Carolina. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with centers across all cities in the U.S. capable of executing a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair may be used. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing solutions.

In recent times, the preference for conducting drug tests has notably shifted towards hair follicle drug assessments. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate hair drug testing over the traditional urine tests. Hair drug tests cater to employers with strict drug policies, the judiciary, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of hair drug tests is the extended detection window for drug usage, often up to 90 days, collected via an observed process, making it virtually immune to tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting substance use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing emerges as a potent instrument for spotting substance and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of a maturing hair strand, hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug usage. When gathered near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection span of nearly 3 months for substances and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation analyses. For EtG, add-ons, or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Whenever scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair corresponds to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for assessing a drug test sample involves four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning requires the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses verifying the sample's sealing and shipping conditions, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data lacking in an electronic chain of custody arrangement.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid evaluation for substance abuse. While screening is an economical approach to excluding drug use in most samples, a positive outcome must be authenticated for court suitability. Samples presumptively positive during Screening need secondary authentication.

If a sample registers as presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is withdrawn from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive screening outcomes. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before undergoing confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation for ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is extremely difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can deliver a usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot discern immediate use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days post-consumption to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
