In Castalia, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing with centers across the nation capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair can be used. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests rather than traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationers. The main advantage is the extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, collected in a supervised manner, making it almost impossible to tamper with, though urine tests remain best for recent consumption.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as an archival record of alcohol and illicit substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 90-day window of detection for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising about 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into a laboratory's system. This step involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplemental data entry omitted by an electronic custody chain.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to negate drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be admissible legally. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive at the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves drug extraction from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter window.
  • Resilience against tampering: It is extremely challenging to manipulate hair drug tests, ensuring higher result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage history: It documents a trajectory of drug use over a duration, instead of only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests," the test itself concentrates on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing is Superior to Urine Testing in Castalia, NC involves several factors. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
