Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug screening services in Columbia, North Carolina. Specializing in hair analysis for drug or alcohol detection, we ensure nationwide coverage with testing centers, including all major cities. The standard requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or other body parts. Our tests can reveal drug usage, alcohol/ETG, or specific testing needs.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method for drug screening. Many companies, legal systems, and addiction specialists opt for hair tests instead of the conventional urine analysis. This type of test is ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. The main advantage lies in its extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, along with an observed collection process that makes it almost foolproof. Nevertheless, for drug detection within the last 5 days, a urine test is still the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand. By acquiring hair near the scalp, it can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry that isn't already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick examination for drugs of abuse. Screening serves as a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use for most samples, though a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

For a sample that is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Any positive screening outcome is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical records: It reveals a history of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Even though often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing
In Columbia, NC, choosing hair follicle over urine tests provides significant advantages. Hair tests boast an extended detection window, offering up to 90 days of drug use history compared to only a few days for urine. This capability allows employers to obtain a more comprehensive view of an individual’s substance habits, surpassing the limitations of urine analysis.

An essential component of hair testing is its resistance to manipulation. Unlike urine tests, which can be tampered with through various means, hair samples are less susceptible to cheating, ensuring trustworthy results. Hence, hair testing enhances reliability and precision, effectively meeting the stringent requirements of drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Columbia, NC, provides an extensive detection period for drug use, making it highly beneficial for employers. Capable of revealing substance use up to 90 days before the test, it offers an insightful spectrum into the history of an individual’s habits. This extended window ensures that employers can make informed decisions based on a longer timeframe of drug activity.

Traditional tests, like urine screens, often cover just a short span, missing past usage patterns. Hair tests address this limitation flawlessly, supporting employers in their commitment to a drug-free workplace. The comprehensive sight into substance history empowers companies with data crucial for maintaining safety and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
