Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Denton, North Carolina. When seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair-based assessments, with centers in all cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required for testing. Hair samples can be utilized to test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

In the past few years, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted more towards hair follicle tests. This type of drug test is preferred by many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals who opt for hair drug testing over the conventional urine analysis. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers frequently use hair follicle tests. The key advantage is the extended detection timeframe of drug use, typically up to 90 days, and the results are collected under direct supervision, minimizing the risk of tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation has emerged as an impactful method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives an extended history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair fiber. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to adulterate, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal measure for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and any tests over 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We advocate for the use of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be substituted. When referencing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in the laboratory assessment of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab's framework. This process entails checking that the specimen was adequately sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any requisite data input not already covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Despite being a cost-effective means to exclude drug presence in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that show presumptive positive results in Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen manifests a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is removed from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers longitudinal data: It can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Denton, NC
Choosing hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests provides significant advantages, particularly in detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
