In Thomasville, NC, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing with nationwide facilities can assist you. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair is needed, and in certain cases, body hair can be tested. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and bespoke analyses.

Over recent years, drug testing frequently utilizes hair follicle tests. Many firms, juridical bodies, and Substance Abuse experts prefer these over standard urine screens. Hair tests are ideal for no-drug-use workplace policies, legal conditions, and probation. These tests benefit from a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, are conducted under supervision, and are resistant to tampering. However, for short-term screening within five days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as it grows. When a sample is obtained near the scalp, hair testing offers upto a roughly three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drug presence. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If head hair can't be collected, a similar amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" strictly refers to scalp hair; "body hair" includes all other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory processing of drug test samples: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a specimen into the lab's system. This process includes the authentication of proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening carries out a preliminary and rapid assessment for abuse of drugs. Although Screening economically filters drug usage from most specimens, a positive result requires verification for court validity. Samples indicating presumed positivity in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

When samples show presumed positives at the Screening phase, more hair is prepared from the original specimen for the Extraction process. At this step, lower concentrations of drugs are derived from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair screening exceptionally challenging.

Confirming any positive screening involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumed positive sample is cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab routine from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specialization and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can reveal drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Challenge to bypass: It is highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thereby ensuring more accurate results.
  • Delivers past data: It can display a drug usage pattern over time, as opposed to only recent utilization.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs generally need about 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often costlier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Discrepancies in results: Attributes like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug indicators in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
