Located in Dillsboro, NC, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair or alcohol drug test, we specialize in such assessments and have facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary for the test. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to customized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair testing instead of conventional urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probation officers increasingly choose this method because it offers a longer detection window of up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is hard to tamper with. However, for drugs used in the last five days, urine testing still holds accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The practice of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term evidence of drug and alcohol use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can indicate the presence of drugs or alcohol for up to a 3-month period. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is simple.

To obtain an ideal sample for screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch portion containing roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) is cut close to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For tests such as EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. Measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the foundational step of integrating a sample into a laboratory's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any ancillary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While it economically eliminates drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples with potential positive results in Screening necessitate further verification.

In cases of a likely positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and processed for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with potential positive results undergo washing as needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter period.
  • Hard to tamper with: The accuracy of hair drug tests is bolstered by the difficulty of cheating.
  • Historical usage insights: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Discrepancies in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer, as the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
