Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Fruitland, North Carolina. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair examination, boasting centers in every city across the nation that can conduct a hair assessment. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head for testing or body hair may be used as an alternative. Hair tests provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the approach to drug evaluations has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair testing over the more conventional urine assessments. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial entities, and those on probation are favoring hair follicle tests. The notable advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window for substances up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, making it almost impossible to falsify. However, for assessing drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake through the embedding of biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When hair samples are taken close to the scalp, they can offer a detection period of up to approximately three months for both alcohol and drug usage. Hair collections are straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), situated nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For tests that include EtG, add-ons, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When citing head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps for processing a drug test result encompass four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing within a laboratory’s framework. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of concern. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is collected from the original sample and is then processed for Extraction. During this phase, hair reveals drug residues at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any Screening positives is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation when required. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is checked in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Delivers longitudinal data: It offers a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair only about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the scalp's underlying hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
