For comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hildebran, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized solutions. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, we provide expertise in hair testing with centers nationwide, including all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests are versatile for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized to other requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method in recent years. Many employers, the justice system, and Substance Abuse experts choose hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probationary individuals favor this method. The advantage of hair tests is the extended detection window, usually up to 90 days. While nearly cheat-proof and collected under direct supervision, urine tests are more precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a lengthy history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Proximal to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of nearly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screenings and confirmations. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. “Head hair” is specifically scalp hair. “Body hair” pertains to all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main four steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial entry of a sample into a lab's workflow. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial swift evaluation for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging process to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is washed as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: A hair drug test is difficult to cheat, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug use over an extended period, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variations such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Hildebran, NC, stands out for its superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. Employers and authorities frequently select hair tests because they offer reliable results and thorough analysis over an extended period, which is unmatched by urine testing.

The benefits of hair testing include its comprehensive substance detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests that identify recent usage, hair tests provide a broader historical perspective, making them invaluable for ensuring drug-free environments.

Extended Detection Window

In Hildebran, NC, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a significant advantage. Covering up to 90 days of substance history, it offers a broader view of an individual's drug use patterns compared to other methods.

This expanded window is crucial for employers seeking a thorough understanding of an applicant's or employee's substance history, ensuring drug-free work environments over the long term.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing in Hildebran, NC, provides unrivaled confidence in the test results. Given the difficulty in adulterating hair samples, the results are considered highly reliable and defendable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
