Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing services in Hudson, North Carolina. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers are nationwide, ready to provide precise hair analysis. Generally, a head or body hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required. Our tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customizable testing needs.

Recently, the trend in substance testing has shifted towards utilizing hair follicle tests more frequently. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts now often prefer hair tests over urine tests. This test type is favored by firms enforcing drug-free policies, court mandates, and probationers. Its main advantage is a 90-day detection window, collected under supervised conditions, making tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, urine tests remain unmatched for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. The hair holds a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When samples are extracted near the scalp, the hair can reveal up to a three-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The fundamental stages in processing laboratory drug test results involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing into a laboratory's system, including ensuring correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick analysis for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples indicating a possible positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a potential positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial sample is sourced for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug assessment the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from the screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned beforehand as needed. The overall lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • High accuracy: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical insight: It delivers insights into drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
