In Lauada, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair sample drug analysis. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, our centers are available nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, but body hair might also be used. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in recent years for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer it over urine tests. It's favored in zero-tolerance workplaces, legal settings, and for those on probation due to its extensive detection window of up to 90 days. This process is observed, making it difficult to compromise, but urine tests are still best for recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within the fibers, offering an extensive historical record of alcohol and drug usage. When sliced as close to the scalp as possible, hair samples can reflect up to a 3-month consumption period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and highly transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 strands of hair (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation procedures. For tests involving EtG, additional components, or more than 10 panels, a specimen amounting to 150mg is advised. Employing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar proportion of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system, which includes verifying proper sealing and shipment, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to generally eliminate drug use from the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any presumptively positive samples in the Screening process mandate a subsequent confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a far lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most intricate methodology available.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the standards set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug history up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to compromise: Hair drug tests pose significant difficulty to deceive, enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can depict a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite common reference to "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
