Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Lincolnton, North Carolina. Whether you require tests for narcotics or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing spans across our testing facilities located nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These tests assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly utilized hair follicle examinations. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists favor hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are integral for organizations with strict anti-drug policies and legal bodies. Their primary advantage is a longer detection period of up to 90 days, performed under observation, making them almost tamper-proof. For drug usage detection within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant approach for detecting substance use, including alcohol. Through the trapping of biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substance consumption. When obtained near the scalp, hair can demonstrate a detection window of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Gathering hair is uncomplicated, fairly resistant to tampering, and conveniently transportable.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to the scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially incorporated into a laboratory’s system. This process ensures the appropriate sealing and delivery of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for drug abuse. It effectively eliminates drug usage for most samples economically. However, a positive screening result requires confirmation for court acceptability. Any sample exhibiting a presumptive positive in the Screening phase necessitates subsequent validation.

Presumptive positives in Screening trigger the withdrawal of more hair from the original sample for Preparation in Extraction. In this step, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screenings as complex procedures.

Verifying any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with a presumptive positive undergo washing as required. Every phase of the laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike the narrower detection period of urine tests.
  • High accuracy: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, enhancing the reliability of outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: Hair analysis reveals drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration within the hair may vary due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand and do not include the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with urine tests in Lincolnton, NC, hair tests stand out for superior detection. While traditional urine tests offer short-term insights, hair tests reveal substance use over weeks, providing more reliable and accurate results. This detailed insight is invaluable for stakeholders who require comprehensive substance history, making hair testing a trusted and preferred option.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Lincolnton, NC shines with its extended detection window, identifying drug use over an impressive period of up to 90 days. This extensive timeframe grants employers a thorough overview of a person's substance habits, helping in critical decision-making. The ability to track this longer duration makes hair testing an invaluable tool for assessing long-term substance use patterns effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Lincolnton, NC, hair follicle testing dramatically curtails the possibility of sample tampering, offering results that are dependable and conclusive. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
