In Lucama, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether it's for drug or alcohol testing, our centers, located across numerous cities nationwide, are equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, hair on the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair testing options.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become the preferred choice for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prioritize hair drug tests over urine ones. These tests cater to organizations with strict no-drug policies and are invaluable for probation assessments. Their main advantage lies in a prolonged detection timeline, typically up to 90 days, paired with a supervised collection, making deception tough. For recent usage, though, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

The implementation of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When collected proximal to the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol intake for a period of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and can be transported with ease.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, serving as the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, additional panels exceeding 10, or similar tests, a specimen mass of 150mg is advised. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be substituted. When scalp hair is mentioned, it pertains solely to the hair on the head. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is integrated into the laboratory's framework. This process confirms the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any necessary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a rapid preliminary review for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to identify drug usage in most cases, any positive indication requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in the Screening phase must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is notably more challenging to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is achieved through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results are cleansed prior to Confirmation when needed. The entire lab procedure, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical usage insight: Hair testing can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lucama, NC, hair follicle testing demonstrates clear advantages over traditional urine tests. The hair testing method offers superior detection accuracy, capturing drug use over extended periods. While urine tests provide results for recent use, hair tests excel in long-term substance history detection, greatly beneficial for employers, legal professionals, and substance abuse counselors seeking thorough assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Lucama, NC, offers an extensive detection window, capturing drug use for up to 90 days. This feature provides employers with a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history, making it an ideal tool during hiring processes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
