Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Maiden, North Carolina. Those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing will find Accredited Drug Testing's specialization in hair analysis invaluable, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. These analyses can screen for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for substance screening. This change is due to its use by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probation officers, transitioning from traditional urine tests. A notable advantage of hair testing is its longer substance detection window, extending up to 90 days, with a supervised collection making it difficult to manipulate efforts. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longitudinal record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the stamen as it develops. When clipped near the scalp, it can reveal a drug and alcohol use history of up to a 3-month timeframe. The collection is straightforward, manipulation is challenging, and transportation is effortless.

An ideal specimen will be a 1.5-inch length comprising roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) adjacent to the scalp, amounting to 100mg that's optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplemental, or multi-panel tests beyond 10, 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be missing, a similar measure of body hair is suitable. References to head hair are specific to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to other varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test analysis incorporates four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary integration of a specimen into a lab’s records, ensuring the container was intact and forwarded correctly, allotting a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing outstanding data input absent from electronic custody links.

Screening conducts an initial, rapid assessment for narcotics. It's an economical approach for excluding drug presence in most specimens; however, a positive result must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples that are presumably positive in Screening require additional confirmation procedures.

Should a sample show up as presumptive positive in Screening, extra hair is selected from the original specimen for Extraction, wherein drugs are withdrawn from hair with more stringent detection levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral samples), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology.

Verification of any presumptive positive outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positives undergo cleansing before completion as necessary. The entire lab protocol, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can uncover drug use spanning up to 90 days, whereas urine evaluations offer shorter windows of detection.
  • Challenging to tamper with: Tampering with hair tests is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers usage patterns: Beyond capturing recent use, it delineates a history of substance use behavior.

Constraints:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair hue and individual growth rates may influence drug metabolite presence.

Note: Commonly mistaken as "hair follicle tests", the actual test focuses on the hair airstem rather than the follicle buried beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
