In Maple Hill, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers nationwide equipped for this purpose. To conduct a test, typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body should suffice. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained traction, with more employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opting for them over urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with stringent drug policies, the judiciary, and those managing probation. Their key advantage is a 90-day detection window and a stringent collection process, making them hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by trapping biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When collected from the area near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for drug and alcohol detection. It's easy to collect, hard to alter, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional elements, or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp isn't accessible, a similar volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean specifically scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory process for drug test evaluation encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary inputting of a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a rapid preliminary evaluation for the presence of drugs. While it is a cost-effective measure to eliminate drug usage in most cases, any positive outcome in the screening must be verified for court acceptability. Samples that show positive signs during screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a positive result in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and ready for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted at significantly lower levels than in methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most complex process to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS conducts the confirmation for any positive screening results. Any presumptive positive samples are washed as needed before confirmation. The laboratory's complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to compromise, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It provides insights into drug use patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
