Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in McFarlan, North Carolina. Specializing in hair drug or alcohol tests, we have nationwide testing centers capable of performing these tests efficiently. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically required. Hair analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing needs.

Increased adoption of hair follicle drug tests has been noted in recent years. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are now preferring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days, accurate observation collection, and difficulty to tamper with, though urine tests remain preferable for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged trace of alcohol and drug activity by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When extracted near the scalp, hair can offer an estimation of a 3-month observation timeframe for alcohol and drug detection. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal portion for testing and verifying. For EtG, additional processes, and/or screenings over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advocate utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the lab treatment of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any other necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary check for substance abuse indications. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to discount drug intake in most samples, a positive outcome requires validation to be court-acceptable. Any samples that indicate a presumptive positive in Screening mandate an additional confirmation step.

If a sample indicates positive signs at the Screening phase, extra hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at a much finer concentration contrasted to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing procedures.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards of accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can uncover drug intake for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection span.
  • Complexity to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It conveys a trend of drug intake over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to ascertain recent consumption: Detectable markers in hair require roughly 5-7 days to appear.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings typically carry a higher cost than alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Diverse outcome variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and personal hair growth disparities can influence the levels of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself pertains to the hair strand rather than the skin's underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
