Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Misenheimer, North Carolina. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair tests, with centers across all cities nationwide ready to administer the test. Generally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair for testing from the crown of your head or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to custom hair test options.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle drug tests has significantly increased. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer this method over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation cases utilize these tests due to their prolonged detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and minimal risk of tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests offer superior accuracy for drug use detection within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive record of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, it can show a timeframe of up to approximately three months for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum collection size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases involved in the laboratory analysis of a drug test sample include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a specimen within a lab’s system. This involves ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing further data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid examination for substance use. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result must be validated to be legally binding. Any samples that result in a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

In cases where samples are presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive result from screening undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is extremely difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug screening techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug markers in hair.

Note: Although commonly called “hair follicle tests”, the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
