Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Neuse, North Carolina. If you're seeking a hair alcohol or drug test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available nationwide. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, either from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are preferred for their zero-tolerance policy compliance and their use by courts or individuals on probation. A major advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days and a supervised collection method that is hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the more accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become a vital method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures long-term evidence of substances by holding biomarkers within the fibers of its shaft. When taken closely from the scalp, it can reveal up to a 90-day detection window for substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be missing, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The lab splits drug test processing into four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Verification.

Accessioning begins with the sample's integration into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample's sealing and shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substances. While being a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that screen presumptively positive need secondary verification.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is used from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screen outcome is done utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before verification if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Verification is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for almost 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to evade: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug usage beyond immediate consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis tends to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Neuse, NC, provides a superior alternative to urine tests. Its benefits extend beyond merely detecting longer-term drug use. Unlike urine tests that only cover recent drug use, hair tests offer a much broader detection period.

The reliability of hair testing ensures that even infrequent users are caught, contributing to a more accurate overall drug use picture. This makes it indispensable for zero-tolerance workplaces and rigorous legal standards.

Extended Detection Window

In Neuse, NC, hair follicle tests boast an extended detection window, distinguishing them from other methods. By analyzing the hair on your head or body, these tests capture a comprehensive overview of drug use up to 90 days prior.

This extended period is invaluable for employers wanting to assess an employee or applicant’s past substance use. It offers a detailed history that covers more than the immediate past, unlike other standard tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Neuse, NC, is its tamper-resistant nature. Sample collection is conducted under supervision, minimizing the chance of adulteration or substitution.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
