Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Youngsville, North Carolina. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, we excel in hair-based assessments, with facilities across all US cities to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair are used. Hair evaluations can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

Lately, adpoting hair follicle drug testing has become more common for drug screening purposes. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair screening is popular amongst employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary individuals. The notable advantage is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, while also being collected under observation, making it very difficult to tamper with. However, for substances recently used within 5 days, urine tests still prove most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeline of up to about 90 days for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken from closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for examination and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. All other hair types are termed body hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core elements in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about integrating a sample into a lab’s framework. This checks if the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry beyond what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening performs an immediate assessment for abusive substances. Although Screening economically excludes drug presence for many samples, a positive result must be authenticated for legal admissibility. All samples testing positive in Screening mandate additional verification.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug analysis is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing, as necessary, before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is meticulously reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation in addition to accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers insight into a pattern of drug usage over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug screening techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Switching from traditional urine testing to hair follicle testing in Youngsville, NC, provides several advantages. Hair tests exhibit a superior detection rate, as they cover a prolonged timeframe, going beyond urine tests' limits. This method is less prone to tampering, ensuring accurate results that employers can trust. The technology behind hair testing certifies it as an advanced solution for substance detection.

Extended Detection Window

The elongated detection window of hair follicle testing in Youngsville, NC, offers a broader view over an individual's substance history, covering up to 90 days. Unlike other tests, it does not solely focus on recent use but unveils patterns, offering employers a better understanding of an individual's lifestyle. This comprehensive approach is valuable for making well-informed employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Youngsville, NC's hair follicle testing stands out for its tamper-resistant nature, reducing the risk of sample alteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
