Accredited Drug Testing offers fully comprehensive hair follicle analysis in Old Hundred, North Carolina. Should you require a drug or alcohol screening via hair, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this method. We maintain testing facilities in cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair can be used. These assessments can detect substances like drugs and alcohol, or be tailored for other specific analyses.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing is increasingly utilized over traditional methods. Many employers, judicial bodies, and professionals in substance abuse prevention are opting for hair testing in place of standard urine examinations. Such tests are beneficial for zero-tolerance employers, judicial proceedings, and individuals under probationary review. The main advantage lies in the test's capability to cover a drug usage period of up to 90 days, with samples collected through observed methods, making them highly tamper-proof. Yet, for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers a long-term view of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of growing hair strands. Sampling hair near the scalp can reveal use over an approximately 3-month period. The process of hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for transportation.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp is ideal, providing 100mg for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair. Conversely, body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test is divided into four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into the lab's framework. It includes checking the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase acts as a preliminary examination for drug substances. It's an economical approach to exclude drug use in the majority of cases; however, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be permissible in legal proceedings. Samples presumed positive in Screening must be secondarily verified.

For samples with presumptive positives in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial batch and prepared for Extraction. At this step, drugs are withdrawn from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed employing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples necessitate washing before confirmation as required. Every stage of the process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes a review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to evade, thus ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical consumption data: It shows a pattern of use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of sensing recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variances: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
