Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Richfield, North Carolina. If a hair test for drugs or alcohol is required, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert. We have facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG or other specialized analyses.

Over recent years, drug testing methodology increasingly incorporates hair follicle analysis. It's being mandated by numerous employers, legal systems, and counselors for Substance Abuse over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle exams meet demands from employers with strict anti-drug policies or for judicial cases and probationary checks. A key advantage is its extended detection span for drug usage, spanning up to 90 days, within a monitored sampling process, and is virtually tamper-proof. However, for drug use detection within the previous 5 days, urine testing still prevails in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period extending up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, expansive panels, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and underarm hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially inputting a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any manual data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial swift evaluation for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical means to initially assess most samples, any positive finding requires validation to be court-viable. Samples flagged as positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair from the original collection is prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of all positive screenings is accomplished through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's notably tough to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers historical insight: It outlines a chronology of drug use beyond mere recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No recent usage detection: A window of 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically have a higher cost than alternate testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Influences such as hair color and personal hair growth discrepancies can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
