Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in River Road, NC. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with centers across all U.S. cities capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly feature hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for these over traditional urine tests. Hair tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation individuals. Their chief advantage is a longer detection window, often up to 90 days, through a monitored collection, with minimal risk of cheating. For drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. By collecting hair close to the scalp, a detection range of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs is achievable. It's easy to gather, rather challenging to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or over 10-panel tests, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent quantity from body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step, inputting a sample into a lab's system. This phase verifies the sample was securely sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any necessary data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a foundational check targeting drugs of abuse. It's a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples; however, positive screenings need affirmation for legal validity. Presumptive positive samples in screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Presumptive positives in Screening lead to further hair extraction from the original specimen, readying it for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair here at a concentration much lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as one of the most intricate methods to perform.

Confirmation for any positive screen results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is appraised under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can expose drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection span.
  • Tough to manipulate: Hair drug tests are hard to deceive, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: They reveal drug use patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs become noticeable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Differences in hair color and personal hair growth can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: This is frequently misnamed as "hair follicle tests", but the focus is on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
