In Salem, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require tests for drugs or alcohol, our organization has expertise in hair testing with facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or elsewhere on the body is typically necessary. Tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to specific criteria.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a method for drug screening in recent years. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse specialists often prefer a hair drug test over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers enforcing no-drug policies, legal courts, and those on probation, offering an extended detection window of up to 90 days and an overseen collection process that is difficult to manipulate. Urine tests still uphold accuracy for identifying drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers capture biomarkers from drugs over time, offering a historical record of drug use in the growing hair strand. When hair samples are cut close to the scalp, they can provide a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, adulteration is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A sample close to 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 strands (resembles a #2 pencil in size) right next to the scalp is ideal, giving 100mg for screenings and confirmations. For EtG, extra tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's best to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, equal body hair quantities can be used. Note that 'head hair' strictly implies scalp hair while 'body hair' encompasses facial, axillary hair, etc.

Process Overview

The key processes in laboratory analysis of drug tests include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial stage of processing a sample within a lab environment. It verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes additional data input if the electronic chain of custody system provides none.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for potential drug misuse. Though Screening economically eliminates most drug usage in many samples, positive findings require confirmation for legal admissibility. All presumptive positives from Screening demand further confirmation tests.

Should Screening indicate a presumptive positive outcome, more hair gets prepared from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods, like urine or oral fluids, making hair drug testing considerably intricate to perform.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies conduct the necessary Confirmation of positive Screening results. Presumptive positives undergo washing before Confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the lab processes are evaluated under the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation, adhering to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter spans.
  • Difficult to deceive: It's significantly hard to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring accurate results.
  • Historical usage insight: It presents a chronological drug use pattern rather than just recent usage history.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically entails higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth discrepancies can alter drug metabolite concentration levels within the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
