Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Saratoga, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, with testing facilities available nationwide. In most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair must be present on the head's crown or elsewhere on the body. Hair assessments can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Lately, the preference for drug tests has shifted towards hair follicle analysis. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and addiction specialists favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers utilize this method. Its primary advantage is an extended drug use detection period of up to 90 days, with supervised collection, minimizing tampering chances. However, for drug usage within the preceding five days, urine tests remain the accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing is now acknowledged as a compelling approach for detecting the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a repository for extended histories of drug and alcohol consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When hair is gathered in proximity to the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of roughly three months for substances such as alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) when closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair specimen is advised. It is suggested to determine the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. In discussing head hair, the reference is specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug test result consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This phase encompasses assuring that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning an arbitrarily chosen LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any supplemental data entry that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug presence in the majority of samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be valid in court proceedings. Any samples that receive a tentative positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a tentative positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and made ready for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from the hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), signifying the greater complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that tentatively test positive go through washing pre-confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection duration.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is particularly challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It has the ability to chart a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate usage: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often surpasses other testing methodologies in terms of cost.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair coloration and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
