Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina. Specializing in hair drug or alcohol tests, we provide numerous testing centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the head or body. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG or be tailored for other specific needs.

Hair follicle drug testing is increasingly prevalent in recent years, often preferred over traditional urine tests by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Hair tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and for those under probation. The key advantage lies in its extended detection period of up to 90 days, plus the observed collection process that prevents cheating. Yet, for detecting drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand fibers. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to three months. It is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), taken nearest the scalp, yields approximately 100mg, which is optimal for testing and verifying results. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. When addressing head hair, it pertains to scalp hair solely, whereas body hair denotes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes its initial integration into a lab's system. This step encompasses confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid test for drugs of misuse. While it is a cost-effective method for dismissing drug use in the majority of cases, a positive result requires confirmation for court acceptability. Samples with presumptive positives from Screening necessitate additional validation.

In cases where a presumptive positive arises in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positives undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as warranted. Every stage from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Altering the results of a hair drug test is notably hard, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical usage insights: It reveals a trend of drug consumption over time, beyond merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color, alongside individual hair growth differences, can influence drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
