Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Spiveys Corner, NC. Need a hair or alcohol test? We're experts in hair analysis with centers across the nation that can conduct them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary for testing. Hair assays can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing solutions.

Over recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly leaned towards hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair exams over standard urine analysis. Hair tests are perfect for zero-tolerance policies, legal conditions, and probation. The key advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, observed during collection, and nearly foolproof. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a longitudinal record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing strand. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month window of detection for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a corresponding amount of body hair can be collected. In the context of head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any pending data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

With a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, instead of just highlighting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the level of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Spiveys Corner, NC, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine tests are evident. Hair testing’s superior detection accuracy extends up to three months, unlike urine tests. This prolonged detection capability ensures a more comprehensive insight into an individual’s substance use history. Moreover, hair tests provide reliable outcomes that cannot be as easily manipulated, setting them apart in drug testing efficacy.

Extended Detection Window

In Spiveys Corner, NC, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing offers a strategic advantage. Capable of identifying substance use over a 90-day period, it grants employers an insightful overview of an applicant or employee's drug history. Such comprehensive assessments allow for more informed hiring decisions, ensuring a responsible and controlled workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing in Spiveys Corner, NC, significantly reduces sample adulteration risks. This method offers dependable and verifiable results in contrast to other drug testing alternatives. By focusing on inherent sample integrity, hair tests eliminate the common concerns of false negatives or tampered specimens, bolstering their reliability and trustworthiness.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
