In Swanquarter, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether it's a drug or alcohol screening you require, this facility is an expert in hair testing with locations in cities all over the nation. The crown of your head or your body needs to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair for testing. These hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Increasingly popular in recent years, hair follicle tests are now frequently utilized for drug screenings. They are preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over standard urine tests. Ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance policies, the test provides a 90-day detection window, ensuring sample integrity and making it challenging to tamper with results. For screenings covering the recent 5-day period, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Testing hair has become a recognized approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and various drugs by capturing biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to gather, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In case scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into the laboratory’s system. This encompasses verifying that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be court-admissible. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
