Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wallburg, North Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing with facilities in cities across the nation to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required, suitable for drug, alcohol/ETG or other tailored hair testing.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a common procedure in drug testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests adhere to zero-tolerance policies and are imperative for employers, courts, and those on probation. They provide a longer detection period of up to 90 days and are nearly foolproof. Yet, for recent drug use detection (within 5 days), urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective technique for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of an advancing hair strand, offering a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs. When taken near the scalp, hair can showcase a detection window of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, the ideal batch for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a similar volume of body hair is a viable substitute. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory analysis for drug test results comprises Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation as its primary stages.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing within a laboratory's framework. This stage involves confirming proper sample sealing and shipping, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and performing any additional data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for detecting substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, positive findings must be affirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening poses the greatest methodological challenge.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as presumptive positives undergo a cleaning process before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for periods extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on hair drug tests is extremely challenging, thus ensuring more accurate results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can outline a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There’s an approximate lag of 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests significantly in detection accuracy. In Wallburg, NC, where reliability is critical, hair tests detect substance use with higher precision, substantially revising the conventional urine testing procedures. Their capacity to provide a longer detection window and greater invulnerability to manipulation is a valuable asset.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
