Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Abercrombie, North Dakota. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we operate testing centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to special hair analysis needs.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests for screening has increased. Employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse specialists frequently require hair drug tests instead of the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve organizations enforcing strict drug-use policies and are employed by courts and probationary services. Its main advantage lies in offering a longer window for detecting drugs, generally up to 90 days, through direct collection, making it extremely hard to cheat. Yet, urine tests remain most precise for immediate use detection, under five days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective measure, hair analysis plays a vital role in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository, preserving a comprehensive history of substances by securing biomarkers within its developing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair delivers an approximate detection timeframe of three months for both alcohol and drugs. This method of collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

By collecting a 1.5-inch segment, roughly equivalent to 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, one can acquire 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests above ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other variations (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test outcomes comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab’s system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any missing data not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid drug abuse check. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug usage in most samples, any positive findings require confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate further verification.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Positive results in the Screening phase undergo Confirmation through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in adherence with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage timeline: It reveals patterns of drug usage over time, rather than just recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than alternative methods.
  • Outcome variations: Factors like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
