Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Wahpeton, North Dakota. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is necessary, our centers, spread across all cities nationwide, are equipped for such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for most examinations. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other unique testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in the drug-testing process. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers value hair tests for their extensive detection periods, typically extending up to 90 days, coupled with a supervised collection process, making them very hard to compromise. For detecting drug use within the past 5 days, however, urine tests remain the superior option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged chronology of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal amount for initial testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a mass of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab management of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's protocol. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening performs an exploratory evaluation for abusive substances. While Screening offers a budget-friendly means to negate drug consumption for most samples, a positive result needs verification to be acceptable in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample registers presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, substances are separated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed preliminarily to confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug analysis can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter window.
  • Challenging to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Displays usage history: It offers an insight into drug usage trends over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unsuitable for immediate detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and personal disparities in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Wahpeton, ND Hair testing offers superior accuracy when compared to traditional urine tests, as it identifies substance use over a broader range, such as up to 90 days. This is crucial for employers wanting a comprehensive review of their employee’s drug habits.

Unlike urine tests which only reflect recent consumption, hair tests deliver detailed reports of long-term substance use, providing an edge in scenarios requiring an expansive detection window. This makes hair testing a more reliable and robust choice.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Wahpeton, ND Hair follicle testing extends the detection window for substance use, offering insights up to 90 days back. This extended period is invaluable for employers seeking comprehensive substance use history.

By analyzing hair, businesses gain a prolonged view into an individual's drug use, thereby evaluating their long-term habits more thoroughly. This broad span aids in constructing a complete profile of past substance interactions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
