Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Carrington, North Dakota. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing and our network of centers across cities nationwide make it possible to carry out such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body, is necessary for these evaluations. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair analysis options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug screenings. This approach is now favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over the traditional urine test. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation often opt for hair follicle tests. The major advantage offered by this testing method is its extended detection window, covering drug use over the past 90 days. The process ensures an observed collection, making it virtually impossible to deceive. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The usage of hair testing has established itself as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. Acquired near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drug detection. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the dimensions of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, special requests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, we're specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial input of a sample into the laboratory's system. This process includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any other necessary data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage from the majority of samples, any positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positive in Screening do demand a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are removed from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards accredited to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for a period of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: It is quite challenging to undermine a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: This can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: It typically takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often described as "hair follicle tests", this assessment evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
