Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Ludden, North Dakota. If hair or alcohol testing is required, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on these services, with locations in every major city across the Nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific analyses.

Increasingly, drug testing methods have incorporated hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer it over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers. Their main advantage is detecting drug use over a longer period, up to 90 days, with observed collection, making them hard to falsify. For recent usage, within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have gained recognition as a significant method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When gathered near to the scalp, hair can deliver a detection period of up to nearly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent measure of body hair might be gathered. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair classifications (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This process includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates validation to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample displays a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology to execute.

Positive screening confirmations are executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug analyses can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a briefer detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a trend of substance use across an extended timeframe, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual distinctions in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as “hair follicle tests”, the analysis itself focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
