In McGregor, North Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing with centers across the nation. To ensure a valid test, typically a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can assess for substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more with customizable options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for drug testing in recent times. Various employers, legal institutions, and specialists in Substance Abuse are now favoring hair tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are essential for employers enforcing strict drug-free environments, legal systems, and probation programs. A key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that minimizes the risk of tampering. However, urine tests remain the optimal choice for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair can offer a substantial historical record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for approximately a 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer strictly to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential phases in lab processing a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial reception of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data entry that wasn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial check for drug abuse. Though Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most specimens, a positive result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Specimens that are presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a specimen is presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations than from other matrices (e.g., urine or oral fluid). Therefore, hair drug analysis is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed for confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair authorization and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter scope.
  • Hard to evade: It's extremely challenging to circumvent a hair drug test, ensuring more credible results.
  • Provides usage patterns: It can show a history of drug use over time rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
